Celebrating our own Analyse Hughes ’25, a passionate Studies in War and Peace major, who recently secured the prestigious Gilman Scholarship. The congressionally funded program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. The scholarship pays homage to Congressman Gilman, and his 30 years of service in the House of Representatives, including a pivotal role as the Chair of the Committee on International Relations. 

Gilman’s final charge still echoes true today when describing study abroad. “It also provides our students with the opportunity to return home with a deeper understanding of their place in the world, encouraging them to be a contributor, rather than a spectator in the international community,” explained Benjamin A. Gilman.

The program broadens the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. Amplifying the global competency of U.S. students, the program paves the way for a more adept future workforce by aiding in cultivating professional aptitude, language proficiency, and a comprehensive understanding of diverse cultures worldwide. 

Hughes is planning to go to Taiwan to study. Her language proficiency, intermediate Chinese, will be a significant asset for her international studies. She credits being a part of the Corps of Cadets and a future U.S. Army officer as helping to prepare her with cultural sensitivity and adaptability. These qualities are essential when working in a foreign environment during a field of study. The upcoming study abroad to Taiwan will not be her first overseas experience this year. Hughes has recently returned from an academically and culturally enriching trip to the Philippines, organized through a partnership between ҹɫС��Ƶ and the Olmsted Foundation. She was among a select group of students from ҹɫС��Ƶ with the honor of participating in this valuable learning experience.
